the copycat artist

are any of you project runway fans?

a couple episodes ago (the stilts one), one of the judges made the comment to anthony ryan that they felt like they had 'seen' his design before and that he needed to make sure his designs were unique.

hmm.  this gave me some serious thinking material.  really?  is there really anything that is completely unique?  i mean, fashion has been around for an awful long time. . . how many truly unique styles could there still be out there?

but it also made me realize that i am more of a 'copycat artist' than an actual designer.  my ideas come from other places.  sometimes more than one idea mixed with another. . . but really i don't have much that is 'original.'

and maybe that is okay.  maybe that is how everyone starts.

any thoughts?

okay, but back to sewing.  last spring my very fashionable sister emailed me this picture:

she asked if i could possibly re-create it, as it was no longer available in stores.

sure thing.

i always see this as kind of a challenge-- to actually make something that is wearable, doesn't fall apart immediately and looks decent.

here is how it turned out:

(and NO, that is NOT a baby bump-- it is an 'i don't eat like i should' bump)

so, what do you think?  do you think there is a career out there for me as a 'copycat artist'?

You did a great job. I watch Project runway pretty regularly, and I agree "there is nothing new under the sun." Actually, I'm always thinking about this. Big CONGRATS on Project Run and Play! Can't wait to see what you come up with.

That's really good! I agree with you that it is REALLY hard to be completely original in design. But after thinking a bit about it, I was never good at taking a picture in my head and painting or drawing it but I could recreate something I had in front of me like doing a person's portrait or painting a landscape... maybe my brain works the same way for sewing. Even when I do have an idea of something I would like to try I have a really hard time figuring out how to do it unless I can find an example.

I think there would definitely be a market for selling patterns online for the latest styles. As far as I know its not infringing on any copywrites. I am currently knitting a dress for my daughter that I saw in a catalouge. I have only ever had one unique idea and that was my swimwear range.

I am looking forward to seeing what you create in the challenge you have joined...

wow! that top is amazing! how in the world did you figure all that out?!

it's hard to be completely unique. everytime i've come up with something i think it so original, i find later that a bunch of other people have thought of it as well. ha ha ha!

I think 99% of designers are copycat artists! And I love what you did! I too have an 'I don't eat like I should' bump =)

Its beautiful! I agree there isn't much original in fashion anymore, there's a bunch of recycling of previous styles. :) I think you'd be a copycat artist if everything you made looked exactly like someone else's. Which is certainly a talent on its own. But being inspired by someone else's design? That's just how it works! :)
