This post is part of a month long series called 'Pattern Makeover Month.' I took a simple pattern (The Sweet Dress by Leila and Ben) and 'made-it-over' into many different styles. For more information, go here.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Cut the Sweet Dress pattern as directed. Sew as directed stopping before you create the casings. Finish the edges of the sleeves and neckline with a narrow rolled hem or a rolled hem edge on your serger.
Now you are going to make a casing on the inside of the dress using single-fold bias tape or twill tape (make sure it is wide enough to hold your 1/4 inch elastic). Measure around your neckline and bottom of your sleeves. Cut your tape to the same length plus 1 inch. Stitch the top of the tape about 3/4 of an inch from the top of the neckline and about 1/2 inch from the bottom of the sleeves. Stitch the bottom of the tape down, leaving a small opening to thread your elastic.
Thread the elastic and finish the opening.
To make the bow for the front, I cut some black fabric about 1 inch wide and 16 inches long. I left the edges raw-- but I haven't washed it yet! I don't know if it will hold up very well. I guess we will see. You can also make it with two pieces of fabric the same size, sew right sides together and turn right side out. Topstitch around the entire thing. And this one WILL hold up in the wash! ;0) Stitch it on the front of the dress.
Another of my favorites!
