Baby Ragged Squares

Another baby quilt finished. . . This is a baby sized version of my first Ragged Squares quilt from way-back-when. I had some extra blocks left over and I thought it would be perfect for a baby boy. Turned out pretty cute. . . Not too girly, I hope? And I tried something different on the binding for this one. I thought that everyone who made 'real' quilts hand-stitched the binding on the back. Not so. I recently read over at Red Pepper Quilts (she makes FABULOUS quilts, BTW) that she uses her machine to sew her bindings. I thought I would give it a try.

I made the binding 2.5 inches wide, ironed in half, stitched about 1/4 inch from the edge on the front and had plenty of foldover to stitch-in-the-ditch on the top, catching the edge on the back. It doesn't look as neat, of course, but will probably work for baby gifts and such. And it was so much faster. Whew.

Please note: Friends and family, I no longer have any good fabric for baby boys. If you could please limit your baby creating to those of the female sex, it would be much appreciated. Thank you.

  1. Great idea, I think I'll try it. I don't mind hand sewing, but my fingers get so sore. (I don't know how to use a thimble.)

  2. LOL I love those colors and I don't think it's too girly at all... in fact my son said he loved it and he is almost 5! And I like you also don't have any boy fabrics!

  4. LOVE it! So I'm curious as to who the lucky person is to get this? I am jealous. I think I may need to have another baby so that maybe I can buy one of these bad boys from you :) Cute. And all that quilting talk is a whole bunch of gibberish to me. wow. I have a lot to learn.

  11. Another beautiful quilt! I just discovered your blog yesterday and have enjoyed going back thru it to see all your awesome quilts and the beautiful childrens clothes. I especially love the "flights of fancy" you showed back in sept. I went to the link provided to get the pattern but it wasnt there. Any chance you could give me dimensions of the center and width of sides? Great backdrops for your photography too. Thanks for sharing!
