Operation: Pay It Forward

My Project Linus quilt:

A quilted knit blanket.

Have any of you ever quilted with knits?  I love how soft the end quilt is, but there are many things I still need to learn. . .  Too many ripples!

Any tips for quilting knits?  I definitely need to add some interfacing next time. . .

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I don't think I have mentioned this yet, but I am part of a group called 'a Dozen Quilters'.  It is similar to a virtual quilting bee, but instead of making quilts for ourselves, each month we make something to donate to the organization of choice of the person of the month.  For November, we are donating stockings and gift cards to St. PJ's Children's Home in San Antonio, Texas.  It is an orphanage as well as a family counseling center.  And of course a place like that has many needs.

What have you created this past month in order to help others?

Operation: Pay It Forward

Another month come and gone. . .

And I didn't finish 5 dresses. . .

I finished 8!!!!

Pillowcase dresses are such a breeze-- but still look so cute!  I tend to buy sheets when they are on clearance at Target and Wal-Mart.  I picked up a few just last week.  Twin sheet sets for $3.50.  Do you know how many yards of fabric are in a sheet set?!?!?

Love it!

Plus, there is a cute little pillowcase that is all ready to whip into a cute little dress.

These dresses will be going to:

an organization that sends dresses to girls throughout the world that are in need.  They are actually celebrating their 1 year anniversary in the month of October.  The hope is to get up to 10,000 dresses by the end of the month.  If you have an extra hour or an extra $10 to donate (for shipping the dresses), pop on over to their site and see how you can help.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

For the month of October, my goal is to make 2 baby/kid blankets for Project Linus.  I have been donating blankets to Project Linus since waaaayyy back when the only thing I knew how to sew were rag quilts.  I made them by the dozens-- literally!  When I ran out of friends who had newborns to give them to, I found Project Linus.  They donate quilts to children in hospitals.  I had a friend back in Kansas who had a baby boy that died before his first birthday.  They spent many months in the hospital during that year.  She now treasures the blanket they recieved from Project Linus.

And there you have it.  I can't tell you how good it feels to actually accomplish a real goal!

Wahoo!

What did you sew and donate in the month of September?  What are your goals for the month of October?

A Day Late and a Dollar Short. . .

Welcome to another round of Operation: Pay It Forward.
Did you accomplish your giving goals for the month?
I did.
Well, almost. . .
My goal was 10 quilt blocks for

Here is what I actually finished:

7 completed blocks. . . not quite 10. . .

And for:

Giving Back to our Communities

my goal was to make 5 bags. . .

But somehow I only ended up with 4. Hmmmm. . .

But hey! Part of my goal is much better than nothing. . .

So, how did you do on your goals? If you sewed anything for a charity organization in the month of July, leave a comment and tell me what you accomplished. Your name will be entered in a drawing for 5 fat quarters from Jennifer Paganelli's Flower Power line. I will randomly pick one winner from the comments on Aug. 5, mid-day-ish. ;0)

Now, for my August goals, I have found another organization to sew for (thanks, Lisa!). It is called Dress A Girl Around the World. Their goal is to make and send dresses to girls all around the world, especially in impoverished nations. You can donate money, pillowcases (for pillowcase dresses) or make dresses to donate.

My goal is to make 5 dresses by the end of August.

(Hopefully I will be a little more diligent this month. . .)

What is your goal?

If you donate something sewn in the month of August, come back here in early September for another giveaway.

Operation: Pay It Forward

Hello, my friends! Today is the first day of Operation: Pay It Forward.

Again, here's the deal. Each month I am going to pick a cause to make something for. If you want to join me, leave a comment. At the end of the month, whoever actually finished something to contribute will be entered into a giveaway. (Don't know what it will be yet-- may be something cool-- but will probably just be some fabric or scraps or something totally boring-- but this isn't really about GETTING stuff, it's about GIVING stuff, right?)

Sound good? Great. So here is what I have planned for July--

Giving Back to our Communities

My goal is to make 5 drawstring bags using some of my scraps by the end of July.

AAANNNNDDDD. . .
(Yes, I am doing two in July-- both have deadlines! Should have started in June. . .)

My goal is to make 10 quilt blocks in July. Another great scrap buster!

(Okay, and get this! Our amazing, quilty friend Lisa is going to hand deliver her squares to Anna Maria Horner herself! I asked if she would mind delivering a few more and she said she would be more than happy to. So, if you want, you can mail your squares directly to Lisa and you may get a picture of your square with AMH! How awesome is that?!?!)

So, click on the pictures, find out more info, look through your scraps to see if you can part with a few and come back here to tell me your giving-goal. Oh, and since everyone has a button for everything, here you are. Grab one if you want.

So, are you in?
If the answer is yes, leave me a comment with your name (or nickname) and YOUR giving goal. Even if it is for a different cause than mine, it still works. The idea is just to set a goal. Anything sewing related, made for a cause goes!
