Giveaway #1

Welcome to my blog! I LOVE giving gifts and so I am offering 3 giveaways today. Please check them all out!

The first is a boutique outfit for your sweet girlie! It is a size 4/5. It is made with lots of Amy Butler and Joel Dewberry fabrics. A very scrappy skirt with a sweet little apron adorned with buttons, and a tiny hem of lace at the bottom, complete with a muslin slip underneath for added fluffiness. The top is a pink t-shirt covered with scrappy patches and has cute little shirred side seams. If you are like me and want to make it yourself (or if your girlie is a different size), the skirt pattern is a Pink Fig Pattern featured in the most recent issue of Stitch magazine and the shirt how-to is also from Pink Fig Patterns.

And it twirls! (My daughters favorite part!) Who can resist?

Now, part of the reason I am SOOO excited about today's giveaway is that I am hoping to open my own Etsy shop this summer and I am hoping to get some input from you! Which brings me to the part about how you can win this cute outfit. I am struggling with how to price items in my store. I want them to be reasonable, but still worth my time. So, in your comment, tell me how much you would charge or be willing to pay for this ensemble (oo-la-la! Look at my fancy vocab!). And if you have any experience in this area and have some tips to share, PLEASE do so! I will pick one winner randomly on the 31st from the comments listed. And don't forget to come back for more giveaways when I open my store!

International friends are very welcome!

What a beautiful outfit, and so generous of you to give it away! My daughter is only 3, but it sure would be cute for next summer!!

I'm clueless about pricing (because I tend to make clothes, or buy them at thrift stores, etc.). But let me guess about $35 or $40? I could see me sending a link to the grandparents when they ask for birthday suggestions. :-)

Little Munchkins said...

Wow, what a lovely outfit! For something like that I would be happy to pay about 40 - 45.

Anonymous said...

I was going to say $40 - $45 and I see I am right there with everyone else. Love this outfit. My daughter would freak if this arrived in the mail. I'll be on the lookout for your etsy store.

Bea said...

This is a very beautiful outfit. Lucky the person who will win this. I agree that it is hard to price items on Etsy. You should probably search for similar items on Etsy and see how much they cost. Then in the beginning when you just open your shop be about 2-3$ less expensive than the competition. Once you have a few sales and people start to know you go with the same prices as similar stores. I would say that this outfit is probably worth 40$ (12.50$ shirt + 27.50-30$ skirt). Thanks for the chance to win.

Unknown said...

It's so beautiful!!! And... the perfect size for Hannah!

Lisa said...

Sorry again, the Julie comment is from me (Lisa in NV). I would say the outfit especially with the top could go for $50.00

emerzim said...

That is adorable. I would say $40 on the low end. If you are looking for a more high end audience then $75 or $80.

Brooke said...

I would pay 45 for the skirt and 25 for the top. It is totally worth it. By the way, I had surgery yesterday and i took my quilt with me. 3 different nurses asked where i got it and if they could buy one!! I will totally advertise for you once you get your ETSY shop up and running!!! I love you!

Lesley said...

I'd be happy to pay $30-40 for this ensemble. My darling Ella would look AMAZING in this, so hopefully I'll win!

Fingers crossed!

Lesley said...

or if you're willing to ship internationally, I bet you could fetch £20-30 for this in the UK.

Thanks!

mchalehm said...

I am not sure what I would be willing to pay, because I am cheap--I always flinch at buying because I can sew! But a fair price I think would be a little higher than what most of the comments say--I am sure that you would not be out of line to charge $50-60.

Lisa @ Life with 4! said...

wow. i can't believe you are giving that outfit away. i have 2 girls... and yes, twirly is always good!
pricing.... i don't know. i guess it depends on price of fabric, supplies, and your time into it.

Jo said...

It's LOVELY! I agree that the $40-$45 ballpark would be more than fair. :)

windycindy said...

The top and skirt are adorable. I love the style and fabrics used to create it My idea for a prize is
around $45.00. Many thanks, Cindi

Oh you should open an Etsy shop for sure...do some sleuthing to find out what similar shops are selling these ensembles for. I would guess around $40-$65 for the shirt and skirt (maybe throw in a headband or matching clips as a differentiator?) I know these would sell quickly; there is a demand for these designer fabrics-- especially for girls' clothing-- especially, especially if those skirts twirl like the photo. That's a requirement for my girls right now :)

Best of luck to you!!

You have a lovely set here, it's really pretty. I have an etsy shop (and a size 4/5 daughter, lucky me) and I would price that skirt alone somewhere betweent $25-$35, but I can see it going higher, I strive to stay competive and reasonably priced:) Feel free to check out my shop:)

I can best be reached at http://AmybugsOriginalStyle.etsy.com Thanks for the chance!!

Bethany said...

Wow, beautiful outfit! Twirly-ness is also a must-have in my house.
As far as price...hmmm...$40-45, but that's just a wild guess. I do lots of research if I were you. Good luck! I hope your new endeavor is a success!

I'd say...$40.

It is a gorgeous outfit. For pricing, I would figure my costs, and my time, and determine what I needed to get to recreate that item.
Thank you for the giveaway,

I think it would be perfect for my Fairy girl... who just happens to be a 4/5T. My mom and make most of my girls' clothes but I would say I would expect to pay probably about $15-20 for the top and $35-45 for the skirt.

Jen said...

I was going to say around $30, but I'm a big bargain hunter, so maybe that's too low.

My 4 year old loves to twirl and would love to feel pretty in this skirt!!

Unknown said...

So cute! I love Amy Butler. My little girl won't fit into that for awhile, but she will one day! I would think that between $30-40 would be good.

Mary on Lake Pulaski said...

This is one cute outfit that any girl would love to wear. I would think for the two pieces you will be able to charge $45.

the sander family said...

I would say $50 tops, but I know how much work can go into something like this so I'm sure it is worth so much more!
This giveaway is lovely, I really hope I win!

Leigh said...

I agree with the $40-45 range! It's adorable and just my daughter's size!

the mama monster said...

the skirt is beautiful! the shirt is lovely too. i'm not so great at pricing but i agree that around $40 is reasonable.

Eema-le said...

Adorable outfit. I would have to say maybe $45-$55 for the outfit.

Marsel said...

Pretty! I like how you have the modern look without it being totally funky. Sorry I can't be more help with pricing!

Amy said...

Seems like most everyone agrees to the $40 - $50 range and I think that's totally reasonable. My little girl is a tiny two year old, but I have a 4yo niece who would no doubt LOVE that outfit and, bonus, we'd get it back once she's out grown it!

I missed the registration period for the giveaway but posted some goodies anyway, so stop by to drop your name in the hat :).

eatmoresmores said...

I would love to win this. My little girl won't fit into it for about 2 years, but that's OK. I'm guessing you could sell it for $50. Just a guess though...

Michele said...

You could easily sell the ensemble for $50. Maybe more.

melonkelli said...

Oh, a twirly skirt. Who can resist.

Probably about $40-$50

Anonymous said...

Oh this is so adorable and the perfect size for my grand-daughter. I would expect to pay about $38. for an outfit like this. I am wishing you all the best on your store! And thank you so much for a chance to win this fabulous giveaway!

craftytammie said...

gorgeous! My daughter would adore this! I'd charge $40, it is designer fabrics! Love it, thanks for the chance!

Tanya said...

Beautiful outfit!

Pricing: How long does it take you to make? Set an hourly rate for yourself, then add the cost of your fabric/supplies - then double it for retail. BUT, Etsy can be competitive so you might need to settle somewhere between your hourly rate plus supplies amount and the retail amount. Good advice I got was to set it at the price you are willing to get to set 100 of them in a row or such ... sewing one is fun but make sure you choose enough that you would feel compensated well if you suddenly had to make a LOT of them. :)

Charissa said...

What a cute outfit!! I'd charge about $35-$40 for it. g

Emily said...

That is adorable! Love it! As for $, i'm not sure...maybe $40? Good luck opening your shop!

Unknown said...

What an adorable outfit, I would probably pay between $40-50. My 3 year old daughter would love it!

T@iy@ said...

If you think about what ugly clothes cost at stores... I would say...$ 30-40?

It's very beautiful! It would be too big for my daughter now, but would be worth saving, or giving as a birthday gift to my friend whose daughter's birthday is soon.

What a generous giveaway you are having! Thank you!

Dawn said...

What a adorable outfit-love the style and fabric. I'm not good at pricing but I'd say 40-45. I'd check and see what similar outfits are priced at.

Our Family said...

Gorgeous! Thank you for the terrific giveaway! I'm terrible at guessing prices, which is why I don't open an etsy shop, but I'd estimate roughly $40 for this ensemble. You're charging for your time AND talent.

Holly said...

My daughter would love that outfit! I would probably spend $40 or so - good luck getting your shop set up, I will keep my eye out for it!

thisgoodlife said...

mama billie said...

An absolutely beautiful outfit! Would fit my munchkin prby next summer~ Thanks for the chance!

Katy said...

$40.

Mama Lusco said...

Beautiful outfit! I rarely sell things, but when I do, I figure an hourly wage for my time ($10/hr) plus the cost of materials. I would guess this outfit would sell for around $40. Good luck!

beagoodmom said...

oh, you are asking the wrong person, I am soo cheap. But I would think that normal people would pay $40 for the skirt and $20 for the top. (which are adorable, by the way)

Gretchen said...

i'm a cheapskate, but i would say that 40 for the skirt alone would be reasonable, and another 15 for the top. people realize that you put time into it, and that's what they're willing to pay for.

Anonymous said...

I usually add up the cost of my fabric, and then set an hourly wage for myself. I add these up, and it is usually a perfect price. (Just make sure it's not a new pattern that will take twice as long to learn) I would say, just from looking at it, I would pay arounnd 60-65 for it, maybe even more.

God luck with your store!
Thanks for the chance to win! And for being so generous!

My opnion is probably $35 the set.

And ooh what a gorgeous and generous giveaway!! Please enter me into the draw.

Leonie Guld said...

Its a huge issue pricing, I lost shit loads of sleep over it, in the end you have to decide what the price is that YOU are comfortable with, considering your effort, net costs and also the emotional cost on the family. Don't cut your self short. I would go to the higher end of the market as you are using higher end products. Trust your self, you will charge what's fair and reasonable in the end. Good Luck, the outfits look sensational!!!

Kiana said...

Beautiful outfit. I think the $40-$50 range would be a good price for the set.

Kawaii for You said...

Beautiful outfit. I'd definately be charging at least USD $40. Good luck with the Etsy store

Laurel said...

oh my gosh, my daughter's only in 2T but I would LOVE to save that for her...

I have to say I don't pay boutique prices - but I'd say the $40 is right on target for what other people charge. I'm too cheap, though, to pay that much...

Brenda said...

My grandaughters will love this. I would charge at least $30.00

kelliemorgan said...

I would think 30-40 range. It is very nice. I think some people would pay even more. Good Luck to you!

Great outfit! My girlies love twirls! I usually make their stuff, so I'm not good with pricing, but maybe around $35?

Mommyof2girlz/StephD said...

It's hard to decided prices. I still struggle with it every time. I scout outfits that are similar to mine..see what they're prices are, think about fabric price, and my time. If this was one of mine I would list it at about $40.
Thanks for a great giveaway! Love the outfit, can not wait to see your Etsy :)

how adorable!!! I would say around $40-$45 for the entire outfit. It is quite beautiful! you are very talented... I'd love to make one too.

Jessica said...

I'm cheap so it would be hard for me to pay you what I know it's worth. I'd expect to see such a lovely set sold for $50-$60 though.

Sarah said...

Considering that something like that would probably cost $40 at Gymboree and only be half as nice, i think $50 would be a good price. However, I think you may want to price them separately. $15 for a top isn't bad, and at $35 the skirt seems like a steal!

RachelJ said...

Beautiful. I'd charge between $40 and $55 for the outfit. Good luck with your etsy store.
mom0ja@yahoo.com

Holly said...

I would say about $40 as well, but it depends on how much time it takes you to make? I know the idea of pricing is what stops me from selling anything because if I actually add up how long it takes me to make something, plus supplies, I would feel bad charging that much! It is beautiful work!

This would be great on my little one! I love selling on etsy, and I tend to underprice (stationery not clothing) because I want to make sales. But I understand completely the need to make it worth your time. Check out the book Craft.inc from your library (or buy it) and read their section on pricing handmade items. It's a GREAT book on starting a business selling your "craft". But I agree with everyone else...$40-45?

Chantie said...

Love the outfit! I'm slowly branching into sewing clothes, so I know how time-consuming it is. I'd definitely charge $45 for the outfit. Thanks for the entry!

Nuwala said...

$35-50 for the outfit. If its a unique outfit, I think people are willing to pay extra for that. That's the beauty of Etsy. Good Luck with your store.

Anonymous said...

wow that is stunning! no idea about pricing sorry

Jess said...

I'll be checking out this pattern!! There's 2 ways to look at this...being someone who sews I probably wouldn't spend more than $30 only because I could actually make it myself, although for someone who doesn't (and trust me there's tons because I get paid ridiciously to hem/fix for people) they'd look at this and easily fork over 50-70

Susan W said...

What a gorgeous outfit! My little girl would love to twirl in that too. I bet the shirt would be 15, the skirt between 25-30?

Thanks for the great opportunity!

Very cute outfit. Would be perfect for my niece. She turns 5 in July. I'm sorry I would not be the one to ask about prices... I'm so use to buying clothes from Target. I know many are way more willing to spend $ on clothes than I am.

The outfit is beautiful. I would expect it to sell for $45 to $50. But as I make clothes and don't buy handmade clothes, I may be undervaluing it. Good luck with your new store.

My grand-daughter would have been so precious in this, but she is now in Heaven. But....my sweet little great-niece, Allie, would really make it "twirl". I would suggest between $35-$45 for the outfit.

I would pay about $34.56 for that skirt. It would look adorable on one of my nieces.

I would say $40-$50 for the outfit or $25-$30 for just the skirt, but I have no idea if that is a good price range or not :) I think they are beautiful and I would love to see it on my daughter.

I would say $45 at least. It takes lots of time I am sure. I think you would do very in etsyland!

Meg said...

Pricing is so hard...you obviously have to cover materials, which can be expensive, but then if you charge $40 and the materials cost you $35, you only make $5 and you are already on the pricey end of kids clothes *sigh* what to do? I'd pay $35ish for this...

Maria said...

This is beautiful!! My daughter would love it if it twirls :-) As far as cost... I could personally pay around $40 for it, but I'm sure you could get more with a higher end audience.

Misty.Creek said...

I'd have no idea what to charge for that adorable ensemble, but I'd probably pay $25-30 for it. But then again, I'm cheap and always tell myself "I can make that at home!" Good luck with the shop.

Sarah said...

I am probably the worst person to ask about prices because I buy most of our kids' clothes at the thrift store. I think something like this would be good as a set at about $35 though since I am sure it took a while. In my opinion, you should take the cost of the materials, then add about $15 an hour for your work as a base for pricing (minimum of an hour for creations....so you'd never be less than $15). Maybe I am cheap though. I love this outfit. It is beautiful!
spondah(at)aol(dot)com

Lise said...

Beautiful! I'd love to win this for my daughter! I'm a terrible person to ask about prices, because I'm a thrift shopper and garage-sale hunter. I'd guess maybe $40?

sb said...

What a generous giveaway! I'm so cheap that I'm sure I'm not the right audience to ask, but based on other items I've seen for sale on etsy, I'd say $45 would be reasonable ($15 shirt, $30 skirt). Good luck setting up shop, your work is gorgeous!

e.c said...

Hard to say...and I don't know the difficulty of the fabric...but I know plenty of mamas who don't sew and love boutique style clothing lines...this would count I'm sure. $25-$35...mostly $35 that's a nice number and i don't think it would scare anyone off. :)

Cute skirt.

Melanie @ Whimsical Creations said...

what a great outfit. I have two toddlers, so they would have to grow a bit before they could wear it, but I would love to have it. For the entire outfit, I would pay $50.

Tawny said...

I have a hard time pricing the things in my Etsy store too. I found the best way to do it is add up all the fabric, notions etc used to make the item and then times by 2. That keeps the price low (a little too low if you expect to be paid for the time used to make the garment), but it's competitive and allows for some profit. I also go to the post office with the garment and packaging I intend to use and ask the post person to quote me a price for shipping. That way I'm not that far off in my guess.

pricing is so difficult. time plus materials is so undervalued.

So beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!! I love OOAK custom clothing so much. It is one of the joys of having a little girl. I have bought several OOAK items on ebay and occasionally have a Fancy Friday review on my blog of custom clothing but since I natually so thrifty this is a hard one. I am going to say--$45.00. However, with this economy I've noticed custom clothing struggling a little bit. I've known a few different ebay stores close down. So prices may have to come down a bit until people have more money.

I think your market would dictate your price - if you are selling to people who are used to being able to buy cheap imported clothes you would have to sell for less than if they appreciated the work that went into handmade and were willing to pay for it. I'm in New Zealand so it's hard for me to judge US prices - once converted to NZD they all seem steep! But I agree with the ballpark figures others have mentioned above.

It's such a gorgeous outfit though, I definitely think you should be aiming for the high end of the market!

I think most people are saying $30-$40 and I think I would agree.
If you look through any of the kids clothing catalogues available these days and see what a mass produced matching set would run you and then decide how much your time and energy and materials are worth then you'd probably be in the right margin.
Love the shirring on the sides of the shirt. Must try this.

Thank you for a chance to WIN it.

OH my! That skirt is just adorable! My granddaughter would look so cute wearing and twirling around in that. Wondeful job and the fabrics are so pretty too.

Cricket said...

I tend to be more willing to make my girls things than buy them - I'm just too darn cheap. That said, for a special occasion I would spend $35 for the set - thinking $10 for the shirt and $25 for the skirt. I'm always thinking about shipping on top, though, so the total cost would be $40? To me that's a lot. But not to other people who don't sew. I think my mom spent $65 for a little swing dress and bloomers for my niece's second birthday outfit.

Good luck in your venture. My girls (the 5 year old, then the 2 year old soon) would both love to wear your ensemble. :)

Oh man, what an incredibly generous giveaway! I'd for sure pay $40ish for this.

This outfit is absolutely precious! I would say $40-$50. Love the assortment of fabric you used.

I can't see myself paying more then $40 for that. It's very cute, though.

It looks so high end and boutique ! I wouldn't flinch at charging $60 for the set if I was the maker, but I PERSONALLY would only buy at $30. But I'm on a tight budget.

I love the outfit. Pricing...since it's truly "one of a kind" you can ask a little more. You have to count in how much time it took you as well. If it were me, I'd charge about $40. Maybe even up to $50. I've seen outfits that were much more plain skirts and tops in baby boutiques go for $80-$100.

i'm a photographer and that eye catching ensemble is fantastic - it's definitely boutique quality that i'd be willing to be somewhere between $60-$80 for - would love to win it for my 3 1/2 year old - something to grow into for a future photo session with mama! great work!

Beautiful outfit! In a boutique you could get probably $60+ for it!

You have a wonderful talent. I am the last person to ask about pricing because I don't pay full price for much of anything. I look for clearance or buy clothes at the thrift store. I would probably think of paying $25 for the cute outfit. I for sure wouldn't pay more than $30.

I'm guessing you would have to think about your market. Are most customers stay at home mom's or do a lot of people on etsy work outside the home? I guess there's no way to know. I cannot afford much because I'm a SAHM and I homeschool. This is the prize I really hope to win because I have a precious size 4 niece I love to dress up.

I would say between $25 to $40 is what I could pay. You could also just sell a skirt seperate from tops. To keep prices down for people.

I don't think my price idea is really enough reward for your hard work though. You could take each suggestion here and average them all together and that should your price. LOL

Good luck. I'll be back, hopefully to buy something yummy from you.

I don't know how much time these outfits took, and that has to be considered, but I think $15-25 for the top and $35-45 for the skirt would be reasonable. I hope you get some great pricing ideas!

Wow! I would think about pricing that little number at about $40-$45!

Probably around $30-35 is what I'd pay. (but hopefully I'll just get it for free...*fingers crossed!*) Thanks for the chance to win!

Such a gorgeous outfit! This is exactly my daughter's size. What luck.
I would think that reasonable pricing for this would run from $40-50. You are using high quality fabrics do I think that justifies a slightly higher price.
Thanks for the participating in giveaway day!

I think the $30-$40 range would be reasonable. I have no tips, though, since I have no experience! The outfit is SO cute!

I'd happily pay up to $50 for an outfit like that!
